Elk Elementary
School
Elk, CA
This is a small school addition we did in the early 80's. It is
an addition to a small 1 room school, now it is 3 rooms. This was
a pilot project for the state. They wanted to try some
alternative energy systems so we received a special grant to
incorporate a variety of systems into the building. Some of these
features are a greenhouse on the south side with a radiant wall, solar
panels in the roof attic to heat water and circulate through a radiant
floor slab. There is also a fan in the attic to circulate warm
air throughout the building and there are solar water tubes at the
large window/doors on the south side. The interior skylights also
provide natural light into the room. In addition, there was a
large wind generator installed to generate electricity since this
school is right on the high bluffs of the Pacific coast.
